Terry Schupbach-Gordon
Bent Like the River
The short, lyrical poem by Terry Schuppach-Gordon that comprises this piece celebrates and affirms the lives of people with disabilities. Schupbach-Gordon, who suffers from spina bifida, illustrated her work with woodcuts that depict the movement of bodies in water. The French fold book, printed on Gekkekon, Gampi, Toronoko and Kitakata papers, has a stab binding with Indian handmade covers. It was printed at the Catbird Press in Pinnacle, North Carolina, and funded by the National Endowment for the Arts and the New York State Council on the Arts.
Artist Terry Schupbach-Gordon said, “This body that brings pain brings joy. I will rise up and live in the light.”
