Cartesian Dreams
Printed on both sides, this accordion fold book demonstrates two conflicting viewpoints regarding Rene Descartes’ (1596-1650) scientific work and life. Regarded as the father of modern mathematics and a major influence on Western philosophy in general, one side of Cartesian Dreams represents the optimistic aspects of Descartes’ pure science and philosophy, while the other side points to the negative consequences that can arise from his desire for “control” and “knowledge.”
A simple pop-out structure, which reverses the peaks and valleys of the accordion, accents the text and creates visual texture and interest. The piece was printed using a silkscreen process and water-based ink.
