Other Worlds: Journey to the Moon
Other Worlds: Journey to the Moon was written by the poet Cyrano de Bergerac (1619-1655), a brave soldier and even braver satirist and free-thinker who challenged the orthodoxies of both contemporary astronomy and the accepted religious teaching. The piece was translated by British scholar Geoffrey Strachan, and is an example of “pataphysics,” the science of imaginary solutions.
The book is bound in quarter goat skin leather and housed in a custom-made box. The text was letterpress printed on Hahnemühle Burga paper and features the Monotype Garamond typeface. The direct-gravure etchings were printed on 300 gram Pescia paper. In the unusual binding, “half pages” open to reveal an etching in nearly every section of the book.
