Mary Ellen Long
Mountain II
The accordion fold book Mountain II is made from handmade paper that was left out in the elements throughout the autumn and sinter seasons. In the spring, after the snow melted, the paper was recovered and used to create a variety of works, including books. The covers are made from rock.
Artist Mary Ellen Long’s direct relationship with the land is celebrated in her book art. She performs personal rituals in her forest habitat in Colorado, such as burying paper or whole books under winter snows and creating art forms that empathize with the cycles of the earth. She also tells stories of events and history, which grow from her need to connect with the natural environment.
