Susan Jaworski-Stranc
Voices in the Air
Susan Jaworski-Stranc’s book, Voices in the Air, is divided into four contrasting sections, “Inhaling/Exhaling,” “Sighing/Gushing,” “Gasping/Groaning” and “Expiring/Awaking.” The book’s accordion fold structure contains various handmade papers which mirror the conflicts in the text. The text is hidden behind Japanese rice paper and sewn into the book cover pages of the accordion structure. A piece of corrugated copper colored paper holds the book together and can be removed for a contrasting presentation.
The text describes the love and conflict in a mother and daughter’s relationship and is represented in changing seasonal patterns. The daughter’s words, printed on the left-hand pages, are complete sentences, while the mother’s responses, printed on the right-hand pages, are fragmentary.
