Shireen Modak Holman
Memories of My Father
Filled with visual memories of the artist’s father who died in 1994, this work acts as a memory book. Shireen Modak Holman’s father emigrated from India to the United States, where he spent the last 30 years of his life.
The woodcuts in the piece employ handmade paper made of cotton rag and abaca. Near the end of the beating, Holman added pieces of old hand-woven cushion covers to the pulp. The cushions had been used in her parents’ home in India. She incorporated the covers’ embroidered design into the woodcuts, and added a small remaining piece of the embroidery to each book.
