Remembering Japanese Numbers

This accordion fold counting book uses silkscreen printing with black and gray checkered paper-covered boards to teach the basics of Japanese numbers using phonics as a guide. The piece was designed on handmade Japanese paper and features silkscreen prints by Seiko Tachibana. Japanese characters handwritten by the artist complement the English typewritten words. The book is housed in a matching clamshell box.

Born in Osaka, Japan in 1964, Tachibana moved to the Bay Area and has been living there for over 10 years. The recipient of several awards in printmaking, her prints are in many public and corporate collections including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor.
