Margaret E. Davis
Beijing Heart
In Beijing Heart, Oregon artist Margaret E. Davis depicts author Larry Hanbrook’s story of his time with Chinese activists in Tiananmen Square. Hanbrook, who speaks and reads fluent Mandarin, camped in Tiananmen Square with the students, workers and Hong Kong activists. Through sharply observed vignettes, Hanbrook delineates the political and personal pressures that weighed on the students and their supporters.
Beijing Heart is illustrated with three photo-transfer images by Davis, and was issued on the 10th anniversary of the demonstrations. Hand-bound in the traditional Chinese style, the book features silk thread over dark blue wrappers. The 20-page essay is illustrated with three photographs hand-printed using an experimental image-transfer process.
