Mare Blocker
Aimee’s Trip to Tasmania
Aimee’s Trip to Tasmania is a splendid example of the book artists’ maxim, “You can make a book out of anything.” Printed papers by Aimee Schellentrager were pasted to vacuum cleaner bag holders to produce a one-of-a-kind accordion fold book. Housed in a lipped clamshell box, the book is both a whimsical and serious comment on the ways recycled materials can be used to create works of art.
Artist Mare Blocker first became interested in books in 1979 while studying creative writing, textiles and sculpture at the University of Washington. She attributes her 20-year relationship with her Vandercook 219 proofing press for instilling the magic that has remained a constant in her alchemical process of art and bookmaking.
