Hunter-Gatherer: Family Business, Mario

Hunter-Gatherer: Family Business, Mario, was created during the years of the Snake and the Horse (2001-2002). Artist Kumi Korf wrote the calligraphy on the title page. Her intaglio plates were printed by Christa Wolf at Rikka Press in Ithaca, New York on Copperplate Hahnemühle paper. Digital images were printed onto the intaglio prints by Chris Tague at the Experimental Printmaking Institute at Lafayette College. The Garamond type was set by Michael and Winifred Bixler and printed by Brad Benedict of Blacks Corner Letterpress. Through the innovative binding, slowly pulling each signature to the right creates a long accordion fold structure. Each page opens to reveal the text printed on the inside. The cover is secured with a stone clasp, and the book is housed in a clamshell box wrapped in a piece of Japanese fabric.

Silk and Secrecy

With text by Emoretta Yang, Silk and Secrecy contains literary histories of silk and its importance in the ancient and modern worlds. The book opens to reveal a cut-out window through which long spools of handmade paper covered with multicolored strands of silk threads can be seen. The piece is the first part of Kumi Korf’s Figured Silks series. The Cornell University Council of Creative and Performing Arts supported the project. This copy was a gift from Mrs. Gin, a friend of the artist.
