Atlas of the Body Transparent

Atlas of the Body Transparent features 32 etchings and aquatints depicting the human anatomical interior. The poetry of English poet and songwriter Roy Harper was the inspiration for the etchings and aquatints, and Harper’s text is featured in the piece. Arist Doug Biden developed and printed the etchings and aquatints. The book is richly printed on Arches 88 paper in 44 colors from 32 plates, and the letterpress text is printed in Bembo Roman and Italic typefaces. The accordion fold structure is housed in an aluminum case, designed to simulate an x-ray case found in medical laboratories and hospitals. When fully open, the accordion fold book extends to 16 feet long, creating a panorama of images, colors and meanings.
