Ann Marie Kennedy
Plant Dreams
Inspired by the artist’s involvement with growing and harvesting flax, Plant Dreams is a meditation on the cycles of growth, decay and regeneration. The book evolved from Ann Marie Kennedy’s installation titled Plant/Harvest at Women’s Studio Workshop during the fall of 1998.
To create the piece, squares of flax paper were imbedded with seeds and drawn on with walnut ink as they sprouted. The squares dried during the exhibition and were used as a cover for the book. The images inside the book evoke the energy of growth and are sequentially arranged based on the stages of plant development. The book is housed in a walnut box with the title sandblasted on the sliding glass cover. A flax seed packet is attached to a niche in the bottom of the box.
Plant Dreams was funded by the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.
